My design practice activity is part of my research approach and inquiry. I exploit it to reveal, inform and inspire my investigation, through experiments with materials, interdisciplinary collaborations and exhibitions, considering all these activities as a whole, which is, an agency of creative proposals, disciplinary criticism and public information.
Design and Materials Science
Working in collaboration with materials scientists, I exploited the design approach to find new possibilities and expressions for ceramic foams. Starting from a protocol of foams used for high technical applications, as transportation, I manipulated the matter following human-centered perspectives and emotional needs. From protocols, I generated design “metaprotocols”, which are creative and unusual patterns of scientific procedures to obtain unexpected materials properties and functions.
Materials revolutions
Materials can become the narrative interpreters of complex geographical, political, cultural and productive scenarios through conceptual and design manipulation practices, i.e. craftsmanship, experimental transformation techniques and hybrid technological processes.
Design critique
Design can promote a debate of ethical, political and social nature, through doubtful, ambiguous, paradoxical, metaphorical artifacts that, as tangible and contextualized in the real world, are able to displace and fascinate. Design, operating on the boundaries between technology, science and society and through both cultural, economic and social lens, is called upon to contribute to its understanding and evolution, inquiring the present and forecasting possible futures.
Design and art
Working in collaboration with artists, my aim is to investigate through critical, conceptual and aesthetic lenses the world of materials and objects. Design, inextricably linked to the role, meaning and value of production - consumption, meets the artistic approach which is the most independent and flexible in dealing with a wide range of issues. This encounter produces occasions for experimenting the generation of contingent reflections and intuitions.
